"I believe we can do nothing more here, this session. Everything worked badly, after you left us. I had one hope, which I never communicated, I think, even to you. By accident, that also failed, at the last moment.
"I see nothing left, but to strengthen members[?] against Dec[embe]r, & if the Treasury should then be in a poor state, we may be able to do something, both with the Tariff & the Sub-Treasury. I shall try to get away . . . if I can get thro' the preparation of my speech for the Press. I am exhausted, with fear & fatigue."
